The Specialized Echelon MIPS Road Cycling Helmet is an updated version of the long running Echelon design. It now comes with the latest in helmet safety, MIPS.

MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed to protect your head from glancing blows. MIPS allows your helmet to move in a controlled way on impact to absorb some of the force of a crash, reducing the shock to your brain. Once MIPS has absorbed the initial shock the in-moulded helmet shell will then absorb the bulk of the force. Overall this dual system gives you a safer helmet.

The Specialized Echelon is designed for road cycling and sits low on your head to give a compact profile. The Headset fit system gives plenty of adjustment so you can get the fit exactly right and the large vents will keep your head cool even on hot days when you are working hard.

Although designed for road cycling the Echelon helmet is also popular with commuters and touring cyclists. The Echelon is a unisex helmet.

What is a MIPS helmet?

Let's start by clarifying the meaning of MIPS. MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. Developed and owned, by a Swedish company that licenses the system to cycle helmet manufacturers. MIPS technology is very popular with Manufacturers.

What does MIPS do?

A Standard bike helmet protects you via a polystyrene shell which absorbs force and breaks apart. In a MIPS helmet, there is a liner that is in contact with your head and will move independently from the outer shell when there is an impact. This allows some of the force of the impact to be absorbed before the polystyrene shell takes the hit and reduces the level of shock to the brain. MIPS works best in angled impacts which is how many real-world crashes happen. Traditionally helmets have been designed for direct, head-on, impacts. So it is argued that a helmet with MIPS provides a greater level of safety in real-world conditions.

Who are Specialized?

Bikes like the Allez, Rockhopper and Stumpjumper have developed followings and reputations of their own. Specialized has a reputation for making high-end, high-quality bikes. Specialized bikes always look great with high-quality paint and sensible sizing hel0s you get the right bike each time. If you buy a Specialized bike you can be guaranteed it will do what it is supposed to and will last.
