The 2022 Orbea Avant H40-D Road Bike in White and Grey is a designed to better help you enjoy the exhilaration of road cycling. With the addition of disc brakes and the ability to take wider tyres, plus mudguard mounts on the frame and fork, the Avant H40-D makes a great all-round road bike. You could use it for commuting, as a winter training bike, take it on group rides or just use it for exploring your local roads.

The Avant H40-D is built around Orbea’s Endurance Geometry which they use on the entire Avant range. This is designed to put you in a riding position that is comfortable for long days in the saddle on roads with varying surfaces. You will still be going fast but won’t be in the extreme stretched out riding position used by pro racers. As well as being more comfortable the Endurance geometry makes the bike easier to handle for riders new to road bikes and makes it easier to see where you are going and pick your way through traffic.

Orbea have spent a lot of time on the Avant’s frame. The tubes are butted and hydroformed with smooth, polished welds to match the look of the monocoque frame. Internal cable routing has been carefully guided along the best path under the stem and through the head tube, with no rattle or rub, and is optimised for both traditional and electronic shifting systems. Proprietary headset spacers smooth airflow and offer easy adjustment.

The Avant H40-D comes with a 2x10 speed Shimano Tiagra groupset giving 20 gears total and mechanical disc brakes for reliable stopping power. Wide 28c tyres add comfort and grip.

This bike is perfect for

Riders who want an affordable road bike with the added stopping power of disc brakes. The Avant H40-D is a versatile bike that will turn its hand to commuting as well as weekend rides. With a 10 speed groupset you gears and it’s also easier to upgrade the bike if you want to.

Key features

  • Hydroformed aluminium frame with internal cable routing and endurance geometry
  • 2 x 10 Speed Shimano Tiagra gears and mechanical disc brakes
  • Wide 28c tyres for plenty of grip

Guide To Road Bike Gears

If you are buying a road bike one of the big differences between models will be which gears they use. Most manufacturers will make the same bike, using the same frame but putting different gears and wheels on it. So for instance you can buy a Trek Domane AL 2 Disc with Shimano Claris gearing for £975 or get the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc with Tiagra gearing for £1625. They are fundamentally the same bike. One comes with the Shimano Tiagra gears and the other comes with Shimano Claris gears.

In most cases, the bottom of the range gears and top of the range gears will basically work in the same way. The big differences are in the quality of material used and the weight. Top of the range gears will be lighter and smoother to use.

One thing to watch out for when comparing bikes is whether the full groupset is being used. If you are buying a bike that has Shimano 105 gears on it. Shimano makes 105 brakes, gear levers, front and rear derailleurs, cranks, chainrings and bottom brackets. So basically all of the running gear on the bike. Some bike manufacturers will fit the full groupset, others will fit Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs but use their own brakes and cranks to save a few pounds. So if you are comparing bikes be sure to check how much of the groupset the bike actually uses.

Road Bike Buying Guide

Nothing beats the feeling of effortless speed you get on a road bike. There are lots of reasons to ride a road bike, from the simple joy of it, to racing, long distance challenges, or café rides with friends. Whatever you want to do there will be road bike out there for you.

Men’s and Women’s road bikes

Nearly all manufacturers have stopped making dedicated men’s and women’s bikes. They are now all unisex. What you will see is that on smaller bikes, brands will often fit a wider saddle (generally more female friendly). On larger bikes they will often fit a narrower one (generally more male friendly).

Disc or rim brakes

It is getting increasingly hard to buy new bikes with rim brakes as the industry has almost exclusively switched to discs. The reasons for this are pretty simple. Disc brakes are much, much, more powerful than old rim brake systems so you can stop a lot more easily and safely. Disc brakes also allow much bigger tyres to be fitted which is more comfortable. Older disc brake systems did often suffer from rubbing and squeaking. While this hasn’t been completely fixed yet it is much less common on modern bikes with hydraulic brakes. Mechanical disc brakes can still take a bit of fettling to get them right so go for hydraulic if you can.

Who are Orbea?

Orbea pronounced Or-bay-ah is named after the brothers who founded the company in 1840. Initially, the company manufactured rifles and guns. The company has been making bikes since the early 1930s and winning Tour de France stages for just as long. All Orbea Bikes are assembled at the Orbea Factory based in the heart of the Basque country in Northern Spain or in their facility in Portugal.

Orbea does things a little differently from many of the big American bike brands. As the heart of Orbea's manufacturing is still in Spain and Portugal Orbea can offer much more customised service. This includes the ability to swap out colours and parts on most of their higher-end bikes to suit individual customers through their MyO program.

Although best known for their road bikes Orbea are increasingly making a name for themselves as a mountain bike brand.
