The 2023 Trek Fuel EX 9.8 is a hard-charging trail bike with a light and stiff carbon frame that's smooth and quiet, and holds its own when you pick a line. It's loaded with the latest tech like a wireless SRAM GX AXS drivetrain that's super clean-looking and customisable. 150 mm front and 140 mm rear suspension keep you in control on the roughest trails and it's all topped off with carbon Bontrager wheels with a quick-engaging hub.

You want a full suspension ride that can handle anything you throw its way. You want the vibration-damping benefits of a carbon frame and wheels and rock-gobbling premium suspension, and appreciate when you can keep your set-up clean and minimalist with wireless 12-speed shifting.

A light-and-stiff carbon frame with a full FOX Performance suspension package that turns chunky rock gardens into smooth sailing. Carbon wheels that keep weight down while offering stiff and reliable tracking. Plus, the wireless shifting of SRAM GX AXS, and tubeless hoops and tyres so you can spend less time fixing flats. Finally, you'll find adjustable geometry and in-frame storage for keeping your set-up dialled just for you.

The Fuel EX 9.8 is the evolution of years of trail riding, with longer front geometry for taking on steep descents, and a steeper seat tube for hammering back up to do it again. Its carbon frame keeps things light, and SRAM GX AXS shifting takes things up a notch for those who want the latest tech.

- Its lightweight carbon frame and progressive geometry are built to tackle steep and gnarly descents and punchy climbs alike

- It comes with light and stiff carbon wheels that make quick work of technical terrain and keep you on your line, even when things get hairy

- You get the latest technology in SRAM's workhorse GX group set, with wireless AXS shifting

- With the adjustable angle headset (angled cups sold separately) and Mino Link, you can choose from six different geometry configurations

- We expanded our size range to ensure a better fit for all riders, and use the best-fitting wheels for each frame size: XS frames get 27.5? wheels, S frames get to choose between 27.5 or 29, and sizes M and up get 29 wheels

  • Internal Storage - Internal frame storage makes it easy to ditch the pack and still carry your ride essentials.
  • Active Braking Pivot - Active Braking Pivot allows our engineers to tune how the suspension reacts to acceleration and braking forces independently. That means you get more confident control when you need it most.
  • Slack or steep, the choice is yours - Install angle-adjust headset cups (sold separately) to tweak the 64.5-degree head tube angle a degree steeper or slacker to your liking ? all without impacting your bottom bracket height.
  • Adjust the sus for full send - Adjust the leverage rate with just a flip of a chip. Ride it in the Less progressive setting for a plusher feel perfect for rugged trails with square-edge bumps. Flip it to More progressive when you're hitting big features and don't want to bottom-out, or when you want to run a coil shock.
  • Size-specific stays - Size-specific chainstays provide balanced handling to keep the ride nimble for smaller riders and improve front wheel traction on climbs for taller riders.
  • Business at the front, party at the back - Craving the nimble ride of 27.5 wheels but don't want to sacrifice the speed of a 29er? No need to choose. The Fuel EX is mullet-ready, just throw Mino Link into high, toss on a 160 mm fork and get ready to party.

Mountain Bike Buying Guide

Mountain biking is an incredibly diverse sport. Mountain bikes now come in three main flavours. They are XC, Trail and Enduro.

XC – short for cross country, are quick race bikes. They will normally have 29” wheels and come with 100mm of suspension. If you are mainly going to be riding bridleways and natural trails in the South East of England, where our shops are, an XC bike will be the quickest and most efficient option.

Trail – these bikes are designed to be pedalled up and down hill and for use on bridleways and natural trails, but also at dedicated trail centres. They normally come with 130mm or 140mm of suspension travel and can have either 27.5” or 29” wheels, but 29” is quickly becoming the norm. Trail bikes are good all-rounders. They won’t be as fast as an XC bike on the flat but they can handle a lot more challenging terrain, and a few jumps. If you plan on taking your bike to trail centres in Wales, or to the Alps, then a trail bike may be your best option.

Enduro – enduro racing is a thing in and of itself but many people buy enduro bikes for ‘aggressive’ trail riding and uplift days at places like Bike Park Wales. This generally means challenging downhill trails with some big jumps. With around 160mm of suspension travel enduro bikes can take some big hits. They are designed to be efficient enough to pedal up hills but really come into their own when pointed downhill. You get enduro bikes in either 27.5” or 29” wheel sizes as well as mullet setups of 29 at the front and 27.5 at the back.

Men’s and women’s mountain bikes

Nearly all the mountain bikes we sell are now unisex. All of the big brands have gradually stopped doing dedicated men’s and women’s bikes over the last few years. Instead they are focussed on producing bikes in a bigger range of sizes. So, for instance, the Trek Marlin 5 is a unisex bike that now comes in sizes from XXS to XXL large. This means it will fit riders from 4’ 5” to 6’ 5” and everything in between.
