The Garmin Varia RTL515 Rearview Radar and Tail Light pairs with your Garmin Edge bike computer, or compatible smartphone, to alert you of vehicles approaching from behind. The Varia RTL515 rearview radar provides visual and audible alerts for vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 metres away.

The Varia RTL515 works with the Varia smaprtphone app which helps you increase your awareness by providing graphics, plus tone and vibration alerts, that indicate the position and speed of approaching cars.

To make sure cars approaching from behind can see you the Varia’s integrated tail light provides daylight visibility from up to 1 mile away. If you are riding in a group then you can switch to peloton mode which provides a low-intensity flash that is kind to other cyclists’ eyes when riding in a group.

Easily mount this sleek, compact device on the seat post of almost any road-use bicycle. The vertical design allows for better leg clearance and a perfectly comfortable ride. Get up to 16 hours of battery life in day flash mode and up to 6 hours in solid mode.

Bike Lights - How Many Lumen Do You Need?

Bike lights are rated in Lumens. A Lumen is the measurement of the total visible light emitted and is commonly used for all kinds of bulbs.

One thing worth noting is that most lights advertise their headline rate. Packaging may say 1000 lumens. Reading the small print they might only do that for an hour. That light may run 500 or 600 lumens for 2 or 3 hours. So it's worth buying a light with more lumens than you need to get decent running times.

There is no fixed agreement on how many Lumens you need for a bike light as it depends on the type of cycling you are doing. As a rough guide we say that:

  • Daytime running lights = 100+ Lumens
  • Urban commuting lights = 50 to 200 Lumens
  • Rural riding lights = 400 to 600 Lumens
  • Trail riding lights = 600+ Lumens
