The Shimano M540 is a really popular mid-range SPD pedal. It’s slimmer and lighter than the M520 and significantly cheaper than the top end XT and XTR pedals. The M540 is a mountain bike pedal designed mainly for cross country and trail riding. It’s double sided so it’s really easy to get your foot in and out of and it sheds the mud really well in the winter. The sealed cartridge bearings make the pedals really low maintenance and these pedals are super reliable, as you would expect from Shimano.
If you’re looking for a reasonably priced SPD pedal that will last then the M540 is a good option.
