Marginal Gains has been the buzzword in cycling for a few years now. Chasing small improvements in every aspect of your riding does work but you can cheat instead and get the massive advantage offered by Orca Aero. A bike that doesn’t just cheat the wind but openly defies it. Orca Aero is the perfect accomplice for riders who aspire to become more familiar with the podium. Marginal gains are for those playing the long game - Orca Aero would rather take the win today.

The front section of the bike is obviously super important for aerodynamics and the new Freeflow Forks create a greater distance between fork legs which reduces airflow pressure around the wheel achieving a 4 watt drag reduction. The 3.3:1 aero profile of the fork legs takes advantage of the new UCI regulations allowing more radical aero forms. As the air passes on from the forks a shortened tail enables the use of flatter tubing, which softens the airflow towards the bottle cages. Flattened sides reduce friction at the front of the tubing and provides better drag at lower speeds. As the air moves towards the back of the bike the Orca Aero Oval Seatpost reduces air turbulence, without impairing its vibration absorption capabilities. The seat post is adjustable, and employs a system, that enables a greater range of saddle adjustment positions.

Of course all that Aero is no good if you can’t get the power down so the Orca Aero is also super stiff. The head tube, bottom bracket and chain stay joints are optimized for improved torsional strength. A more rigid Orca Aero means improved power transmission from the cyclist.

The Orca Aero M21E Team comes with the latest SRAM AXS eTap 12 speed gearing and hydraulic disc brakes. eTap gives your smooth wireless shifting so you get the right gear every time. The Vision carbon aero wheels help with the overall aerodynamics and are tubless ready.

This bike is perfect for

Racer or triathletes who want a high performance aero bike with carbon aero wheels and the latest wireless shifting technology.

Guide To Road Bike Gears

If you are buying a road bike one of the big differences between models will be which gears they use. Most manufacturers will make the same bike, using the same frame but putting different gears and wheels on it. So for instance you can buy a Trek Domane AL 2 Disc with Shimano Claris gearing for £975 or get the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc with Tiagra gearing for £1625. They are fundamentally the same bike. One comes with the Shimano Tiagra gears and the other comes with Shimano Claris gears.

In most cases, the bottom of the range gears and top of the range gears will basically work in the same way. The big differences are in the quality of material used and the weight. Top of the range gears will be lighter and smoother to use.

One thing to watch out for when comparing bikes is whether the full groupset is being used. If you are buying a bike that has Shimano 105 gears on it. Shimano makes 105 brakes, gear levers, front and rear derailleurs, cranks, chainrings and bottom brackets. So basically all of the running gear on the bike. Some bike manufacturers will fit the full groupset, others will fit Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs but use their own brakes and cranks to save a few pounds. So if you are comparing bikes be sure to check how much of the groupset the bike actually uses.

Road Bike Buying Guide

Nothing beats the feeling of effortless speed you get on a road bike. There are lots of reasons to ride a road bike, from the simple joy of it, to racing, long distance challenges, or café rides with friends. Whatever you want to do there will be road bike out there for you.

Men’s and Women’s road bikes

Nearly all manufacturers have stopped making dedicated men’s and women’s bikes. They are now all unisex. What you will see is that on smaller bikes, brands will often fit a wider saddle (generally more female friendly). On larger bikes they will often fit a narrower one (generally more male friendly).

Disc or rim brakes

It is getting increasingly hard to buy new bikes with rim brakes as the industry has almost exclusively switched to discs. The reasons for this are pretty simple. Disc brakes are much, much, more powerful than old rim brake systems so you can stop a lot more easily and safely. Disc brakes also allow much bigger tyres to be fitted which is more comfortable. Older disc brake systems did often suffer from rubbing and squeaking. While this hasn’t been completely fixed yet it is much less common on modern bikes with hydraulic brakes. Mechanical disc brakes can still take a bit of fettling to get them right so go for hydraulic if you can.

Who are Orbea?

Orbea pronounced Or-bay-ah is named after the brothers who founded the company in 1840. Initially, the company manufactured rifles and guns. The company has been making bikes since the early 1930s and winning Tour de France stages for just as long. All Orbea Bikes are assembled at the Orbea Factory based in the heart of the Basque country in Northern Spain or in their facility in Portugal.

Orbea does things a little differently from many of the big American bike brands. As the heart of Orbea's manufacturing is still in Spain and Portugal Orbea can offer much more customised service. This includes the ability to swap out colours and parts on most of their higher-end bikes to suit individual customers through their MyO program.

Although best known for their road bikes Orbea are increasingly making a name for themselves as a mountain bike brand.
