Our own Richard Williams gives his account’ about setting out from Brighton Pier in high spirits, to complete the 100 mile Pier to Pier challenge to Southend Pier. After riding out of Brighton a little after 8am we all steered over the Ditching Beacon and powered through the South Downs hills. The whole team even tackled some off road activity and fence climbing as we rode into Kent.
We all handled the rising heat as we headed into the North Downs and we were thankful for the refreshment stop with the Cycles UK support vehicle. The ride challenged all the team and with every revolution we remembered why we were riding. When we arrived in Gravesend to board the Tilbury Riverside Ferry; the Cycles UK van checked us on the other side before we set off again. Team spirit was still high as we rode off thinking Essex was relatively flat; that was forgetting that South Hill in Laindon was awaiting us…
That final demanding part completed, the team rolled down Southend Seafront. We appreciated the fantastic welcoming committee awaiting us underneath the Pier to steer across the finish line at Southend Pier. We had the aim to raise £3,000 to contribute to the £250,000 target that will be raised eventually. We had a fantastic day in the saddle, after 100 miles of riding and 8000ft of climbing we were all really proud of what we had achieved as we remembered why we were riding…to raise money for #TeamTC.
