If you are looking for somewhere to take your family cycling you will likely want a route with as little traffic as possible, especially if you have young children. Using feedback from the Cycles UK shop staff and local cyclists we have put together a list of our top 10 family cycling desinations in Essex, Kent, Suffolk and Norfolk.

All of the family cycling destinations on our list are either entirely traffic free or have large traffic free sections. They include old railway lines, forest parks and dedicated cycling centres perfect for a family day out.


  1. Marriots Way – A 24 mile cycle route from Norwich to Aylsham following an old railway line through the stunning Norfolk countryside.
  1. Thetford Forest – Over 30 miles of traffic free cycle routes including family friendly tracks and purpose built mountain bike trails.
  1. Rendelsham and Tunstall Forest – 16 miles of family friendly cycle paths in Rendelsham forest with the more challenging 10 mile Viking Trail in nearby Tunstall Forest.
  1. Flitch Way – a 15 mile, largely traffic free, route following the old Braintree to Bishop’s Stortford railway line. The Braintree to Great Dunmow section is best for families.
  1. Hadleigh Park – The 2012 Olympic mountain bike course is now open to the public with a family friendly blue route and mixed use trails to try as well.
  1. Cyclopark – a dedicated cycling centre with road, mountain bike and BMX areas to explore. Ideal for any budding racers to practice their skills.
  1. Shorne Woods Country Park – over 12 miles of mixed use trails open to cyclists, walkers and horse riders make for a lovely family day out.
  1. Crab and Winkle Way – a mostly traffic free 7 mile route that takes you from the centre of Canterbury to the coast at Whitstable using an old railway line.
  1. Betteshanger Park – a dedicated cycling centre with a traffic free road circuit and 6 miles of mountain bike trails for families and kids to explore.
  1. Bedgebury Forest – a 6 mile family cycling route and an 8 mile mountain bike route within a 2000 acre forest means there is plenty to explore.
