what is the World’s Safest Cycling Helmet in 2021? Every year Virginia Tech University do a study of the safest cycling helmets you can buy. In the last couple of years Bontrager’s Wavecel technology has dominated but for 2021 Specialized have taken top honours in 2 out of 3 categories. 

Virginia Tech submits all the helmets they test to a series of 24 impacts. Designed to mimic a range of different crashes and impacts. Sensors inside the helmet measure how your head would respond to each impact. Then give an overall score and star rating is given.

Safest Urban Helmet

The Specialized Mode took top honours in the safest helmet for urban riders category. This helmet launched in October 2021 so is brand new to the market. It’s designed to be stylish as well as safe and stays away from the usual cycle helmet look. It still comes with plenty of ventilation though. It also passes the Dutch e-bike Standard NTA8776 so you can ride with confidence on electric or acoustic bikes. The mode is currently available in 3 colours and 3 sizes and is £100.

The Specialized Tactic 4 is another new helmet, just launched in October 2021 and was rated by Virginia Tech as the safest mountain bike helmet on the test. Tactic 4 was designed to give trail mountain bike riders plenty of confidence and ventilation while also being super comfy. It's new fit system to fit as many different types of heads as possible and extended coverage at the rear. Specialized also designed it to accommodate riders wearing goggles or sunglasses and, like the Mode, it passes the Dutch e-bike Standard NTA8776. The Tactic 4 comes in 6 colours and 3 sizes and cost £100.

The Specialized Align II MIPS helmet did not win any awards. But it did come in 5th on the mountain bike ratings, 3rd on the road bike ratings and 2nd on the urban category. Not bad for a helmet that costs £45! As you can tell from all the categories it is in the Align II MIPS is a super versatile helmet that works for almost any type of cycling. It also comes in a huge range of colours and 3 different sizes so it will fit pretty much anyone.
