What Is Specialized ANGI?

The Specialized ANGi (Angular and G-Force indicator) system is a small tracking device that attaches to your helmet. ANGi syncs with your phone and uses GPS signals to track your ride. It can tell your friends and family when you have gone out and let them know where you are. If the worst happens and you have a crash ANGi can automatically tell your emergency contacts by sending them your coordinates.

The Specialized ANGI system is partly based on technology from the ICEdot crash sensor. Specialized's bought the ICEdot company and ICEdot’s founder, Chris Zenthoefer, now leads ANGi development.

Specialized are incorporating the ANGi technology into many of their helmets for 2019. You can also buy the ANGi device separately and fit it to most cycle helmets. To sync ANGi with your smartphone you will need to install the free Specialized Ride Premium App compatible with both Android and Apple phones

ANGi can measure the impact of your helmet on the ground during a crash. It can also measure violent rotations when you crash but your helmet doesn’t take the impact. If ANGi thinks you have crashed it will send a signal to your phone which will start a countdown. If you don’t stop the countdown it will send out your last known GPS coordinates to your emergency contacts. You can set an expected time for your ride and have ANGi alert your emergency contacts if you are late. This is useful for rides off the beaten track where phone signals may be patchy.

To avoid false alarms Specialized have configured ANGi to only send alerts for big impacts. They say that they are “specifically looking for crashes that deliver dangerous forces that could result in a rider being unable to seek help themselves”.

As well as being used to detect crashes ANGi works with the Specialized Ride App to track the usual ride data such as position and speed. The Ride App lets you plan and record rides and then sync your data to platforms like Strava.
