Best 2019 Mountain bikes under £1000

The Best 2019 Mountain bikes under £1000 are simplistic, true to their roots and focus on fun. They aren’t bogged down in complex suspension systems designed by rocket scientists or the newest, lightest carbon layup. No, they are made of aluminium like they have been for years. They sit you in an upright position perfect for just about everything and have two wheels encased in grippy rubber.

That being said, standards have changed. Gone are the days of 26” wheels and triple chainsets. The £1000 category is still everything we love about mountain biking.

Trek X-Caliber 8

The Trek X-Caliber is the little brother of the Procalibre, Trek’s fully race-ready hardtail mountain bike. That means this bike goes fast everywhere and has a no-nonsense spec. With a Rockshox 30 Silver fork, Shimano XT/Deore 2x10 drivetrain and a Bontrager Kovee wheelset, it would be right at home in a local race, on long-distance rides or even commuting to work with its rack and guard mounts.

Trek Roscoe 7

The Trek Roscoe is a fairly rare breed of plus-sized trail hardtails. With 27.5+ tyres and 120mm of front suspension, the Roscoe is a great way to nail some trails on a tight budget. The 1x10 Shimano Deore drivetrain provides reliable shifting and a simplified set up which makes room for a dropper post.

Specialized Rockhopper Expert

The Rockhopper was Specialized’s second in line to the mountain biking throne for a long time, only topped by the Stumpjumper. Today the Rockhopper provides a fast cross country ride on a budget and a heap of versatility and reliability. The spec is lower than some of the others on this list but you get a 2x10 Shimano Deore drivetrain and an XCM air fork as well as Specialized’s Stout 29er wheelsets.

Cannondale Cujo 1

The Cannondale Cujo is a similar bike to the Trek Roscoe. It has 27.5” wheels with 2.8” tyres, a 120mm RockShox Recon suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes. It also has a 1x11 Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain which puts it a notch higher than the Roscoe and a TranzX dropper post. It’s a playful hardtail that is built for the trails - you think a hardtail can’t shred hard? Think again.

GT Avalanche Expert

The GT Avalanche is a ‘trail ready’ hardtail that comes in either 27.5 or 29er models. You wouldn’t choose this bike over the Roscoe or Cujo for pure trail use, but if you want a mixture of trail capability and cross country speed, the Avalanche is a good choice with it’s 100mm RockShox Recon Fork and Shimano SLX 1x11 drivetrain.

Whyte 805

The Whyte 805 might not have the fanciest parts in this category, but its the longest, slackest and most stable…est. If you are wanting top trail performance from a hardtail, look no further than the 805 with 120mm of travel up front, playful 27.5” wheels and Whyte’s unparalleled trail geometry.

Whyte 529

If downhill prowess isn’t the only thing you want and factors like speed and climbing are also on your list, the Whyte 529 is the one for you. Much like the 805 it has a long wheelbase and excellent trail orientated geometry, but it is also right at home covering long miles cross country, and climbing back up to the top of trailheads. You still get 120mm of travel and a 1x10 Shimano Deore drivetrain, but those 29” wheels roll faster than the 805s 27.5” wheels.
