The 2021 Orbea Orca M25 Team Road Bike in Military Green is designed to be light, fast and beautiful. Performance, technology and style have always been cornerstones of cycling. We may not compete but we love the feel of a racing bike. Professional athletes, weekend warriors, Strava hunters and recreational riders all have similar aspirations and the Orbea Orca is designed to let you meet them.

The Orca has always been Orbea’s race bike and as you would expect it is designed to be light and aerodynamic. For 2021 Orbea have also made it easier to live with, softening some of the harsher edges to give you a bike that is also comfortable enough to use on all-day rides without compromising on speed.

The Orca M40 is built around Orbea’s new 2021 OMR frame which uses rounded shapes that improve compliance and reduce weight. The layup and dynamic structure gives a compliance and vibration absorption 5% better that the previous OMR frames so it soaks up more bumps and vibrations.

The Orca is still designed to be fast. Clever carbon engineering allows less carbon to be used while maintaining strength. So you get a lighter and faster bike. It also uses Orca Racing Geometry; born from almost 100 years of designing road racing bikes and is the perfect balance of responsiveness and stability. The position is aggressive to maximize body aerodynamics and efficiency. Handling is precise and intuitive. Angles and dimensions are considered carefully across a range of sizes to put more power to the road with every pedal stroke, and more power means more speed.

The Orca M25 Team is a more speed focussed variant of the Orca. It comes with tubeless ready carbon wheels for better acceleration, greater aerodynamic advantage and better grip. Coupled with an 11 speed Ultegra group set with hydraulic disc brakes this is a great setup for fast club rides, sportives and racing.

This bike is perfect for

Road riders who want a classic light, fast and beautiful bike that can be ridden all day. With carbon aero wheels and 11 speed Shimano Ultegra gears this is a bike for riders who to go fast.

Key features

  • 2021 Orbea OMR carbon fibre frame that is light and responsive but with enough compliance to ride for hours
  • Orbea Orca Racing Geometry lets you get the most power out of every pedal stroke
  • Carbon tubeless ready wheels
  • High performing Shimano Ultegra 11 speed gearing and hydraulic disc brakes

Guide To Road Bike Gears

If you are buying a road bike one of the big differences between models will be which gears they use. Most manufacturers will make the same bike, using the same frame but putting different gears and wheels on it. So for instance you can buy a Trek Domane AL 2 Disc with Shimano Claris gearing for £975 or get the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc with Tiagra gearing for £1625. They are fundamentally the same bike. One comes with the Shimano Tiagra gears and the other comes with Shimano Claris gears.

In most cases, the bottom of the range gears and top of the range gears will basically work in the same way. The big differences are in the quality of material used and the weight. Top of the range gears will be lighter and smoother to use.

One thing to watch out for when comparing bikes is whether the full groupset is being used. If you are buying a bike that has Shimano 105 gears on it. Shimano makes 105 brakes, gear levers, front and rear derailleurs, cranks, chainrings and bottom brackets. So basically all of the running gear on the bike. Some bike manufacturers will fit the full groupset, others will fit Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs but use their own brakes and cranks to save a few pounds. So if you are comparing bikes be sure to check how much of the groupset the bike actually uses.

Road Bike Buying Guide

Nothing beats the feeling of effortless speed you get on a road bike. There are lots of reasons to ride a road bike, from the simple joy of it, to racing, long distance challenges, or café rides with friends. Whatever you want to do there will be road bike out there for you.

Men’s and Women’s road bikes

Nearly all manufacturers have stopped making dedicated men’s and women’s bikes. They are now all unisex. What you will see is that on smaller bikes, brands will often fit a wider saddle (generally more female friendly). On larger bikes they will often fit a narrower one (generally more male friendly).

Disc or rim brakes

It is getting increasingly hard to buy new bikes with rim brakes as the industry has almost exclusively switched to discs. The reasons for this are pretty simple. Disc brakes are much, much, more powerful than old rim brake systems so you can stop a lot more easily and safely. Disc brakes also allow much bigger tyres to be fitted which is more comfortable. Older disc brake systems did often suffer from rubbing and squeaking. While this hasn’t been completely fixed yet it is much less common on modern bikes with hydraulic brakes. Mechanical disc brakes can still take a bit of fettling to get them right so go for hydraulic if you can.

Who are Orbea?

Orbea pronounced Or-bay-ah is named after the brothers who founded the company in 1840. Initially, the company manufactured rifles and guns. The company has been making bikes since the early 1930s and winning Tour de France stages for just as long. All Orbea Bikes are assembled at the Orbea Factory based in the heart of the Basque country in Northern Spain or in their facility in Portugal.

Orbea does things a little differently from many of the big American bike brands. As the heart of Orbea's manufacturing is still in Spain and Portugal Orbea can offer much more customised service. This includes the ability to swap out colours and parts on most of their higher-end bikes to suit individual customers through their MyO program.

Although best known for their road bikes Orbea are increasingly making a name for themselves as a mountain bike brand.
